What We Believe - Statement of Faith

We believe in the Trinity: The Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit and these three make up one
eternal God.
We believe that Jesus is the exact representation of God. He is the fullness of the Deity in bodily
form and we are filled with the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way.
We are loved by God. This love is eternal and nothing can ever separate us from this love. It is
higher, wider, longer, deeper than we know and it transcends all human knowledge. Yet, we
can know it by the power of the Holy Spirit which abides within all followers of Christ.
If we want to know what God is like, we look at Jesus. Why? Because no one has ever seen God
at any time, except for Jesus who came to reveal the Father to us.
We believe that God is a better Father than anyone could ever have here in this life. This means
he does not punish his children with sickness, but rather brings healing to us out of His deep
love for us.
We believe that if we abide in Christ, then He abides in us. This means that we are filled with
the Holy Spirit of Christ and are capable of living, serving, giving, sharing, forgiving and loving
exactly the way Jesus did.
We believe that our love for the Father and for Christ is reflected and revealed in the ways we
love one another – especially those who are the weakest, poorest, and most vulnerable and
oppressed.
We believe that God is good, and God loves us. God does not cause disaster or chaos, but God
certainly walks with us through the valley of darkness and is committed to using everything we
experience for our good and to lead us to maturity in Christ.
This process is not for us alone but the comfort we receive from God we are expected to pass
along to those we encounter along the way who are also going through similar struggles.
We believe that Jesus is not tribal. He calls us to follow him in his full-bodied embrace of all
people, at all times, in all places, from all nations. Jesus is not an American. In his Body we are
all made one. There is no longer any Jew or Gentile, Male or Female, Rich or Poor, Gay or
Straight, Slave or Free, or any other label, denomination or division.
We believe that Jesus is preemptively loving and never violent. He calls us to overcome evil
with good, to bless those who curse us, pray for those who hate us and do good to those who
persecute us.

We believe that by abiding in Christ, we can actually do all these things, and more. Because we
can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
We believe that no one is a worm, or a wretch in the eyes of God. We may want to think of
ourselves this way, but God NEVER does this. He never calls us worms or wretches. Instead,
God affirms over and over again that we are loved, accepted, forgiven, healed, adored, missed,
and treasured. There are no worms in God’s Kingdom, only beloved children.
We believe that the Christian faith is founded on three primary calls we can see through Christ.
To love God, to love our neighbor, and to love ourselves.
We believe to be a Christian means to actually follow Christ and his teachings. Jesus told the
rich young ruler when he asked how do I obtain eternal life, Go sell what you have, give to the
poor and follow me. That is all we have to do. There are no magic words to say. There are no
rituals. It’s that simple. There is nothing we need to do earn salvation and there is nothing we
can do to make God love us more or love us less. You can even be a follower of Christ without
knowing it! We are judged based off of the condition of our hearts. Remember it’s not what
goes into the temple that defiles us. It’s what comes out! If you are a follower of Christ then
what comes out is love, kindness, hospitality, charity, empathy, and compassion. Those are the
qualifiers. We will be judged by fruit we bear. If the only things you see coming from a person is
hate, judgement, condemnation, exclusion, selfishness, self-righteousness, and a nasty attitude,
then those are not the fruits a true follower of Christ. Also, we share our lives with people who
are Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Agnostic, Atheist etc. We experience these people as
loving and caring. The power of the Christian faith to transform lives does not require us to try
to convert them to the way we believe. We do not hold that we are exclusive. Exclusivity is born
out of fear. We believe that God loves and God welcomes them all.
We believe the Love of God involves all aspects of life, not just human life. The care of the Earth
and its ecosystems is an expression of Christian faith and stewardship. This principle stems from
our ever-widening understanding of climate change and influence our carbon footprint has on
the quality of the air, water and soil. Science and religious faith are friends – each informs the
other. Wisdom and insight from both are essential for Christian faith.
We believe that loving our neighbor means extending kindness and care to those in our family
and in our local and global communities. Further, love of neighbor includes affirmation of all
ethnicities, the LBGTQ community, immigrants, people of other faith traditions and even those
who are enemies.
We believe that loving of yourself means engaging in spiritual disciplines. Worship, prayer,
music, study of the Bible and other literature feeds the mind, heart and spirit. The love of self
also includes giving time for rest, recreation, nurturing friendship, a healthy diet and physical
exercise. Love of self requires humility and humor.

We believe that the Bible should not be interpreted literally. Metaphors and Parables make up
99% of scripture and offer more meaningful interaction with the reader. Literalism tends create
one dimensional reading and offers little in terms of helpful dialogue.
We believe that Christ has already returned in the form of The Holy Spirit. There is no reason to
look for Christ’s return or the physical end of the world.
We believe that each person is responsible to make their communities better through
compassion and empathy.
We believe in advocating for a thinking faith. The Bible speaks of studying so we will know how
to divide the word of truth.
